Family Science Night

Annie Schmitt helps son Jonah with his science experiment on Family Science Night.
Family Nights have been a very popular addition to the Home & School calendar this year.

From the Principal

Dear Parents,

I thank those responsible for the Science Night on Friday. All the participants, including parents, had a great time.

Special thanks to Mrs. Ryals for organizing the event and for Mr. Waddell and the members of the Home and School for their part in promoting, organizing and supporting the night out with the students of St. Joseph.

There were well over a hundred participants making snot or slime, shooting rockets, building structures, making ice cream and mixing some kind of materials that passed from solids to liquids in some mysterious way. All who attended had a great time.

A productive Home and School Meeting was held last Thursday. Plans are being made for the Fair and for the Strawberry Fest Parking. We thank the 31 families that were represented and again encourage the rest of you to come to the meetings and participate in the organization. We have much to do for your children. We need your support.

—Dr. Gerard Toups

St. Jude Math-a-Thon

This year, the Math-a-Thon celebrates thirty years of helping children in the fight against cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases.

In keeping with the theme of Catholic Schools Week, Catholic Schools Celebrate Service, students in Grades 4-8 have the opportunity to “serve” those in need by participating in the Math-a-Thon. What a wonderful Lenten Service Project!

This is also a great opportunity to hone those math skills.

Math-a-Thon packets with important information such as how the Math-a-Thon works, prizes, permission forms, etc. were sent home last week.

Please encourage your children to participate in this most worthwhile endeavor.

Important dates to remember: Friday, February 13 - permission slips due
Wednesday, February 25 - Math-a-Thon kick off (booklets distributed)
Thursday, March 19 - money due (checks only, payable to St. Jude Research

Mother Seton Ballots

A ballot for the Mother Seton Award is included in today’s packet.

Please read the guidelines carefully, then circle the nominee of your choice, and return the ballot back to the office by Friday, February 13.

Please vote for only one person.

Thank you for your help in this matter.

Literary Club Contest

The SJS Literary Club is sponsoring its writing and art contest for the Second Semester.

The theme for the contest is sports. The contest is open for all SJS students in Grades 5-8.

Entries should be turned in to the club sponsor, Mrs. Nancy Redmann, on or before February 13.

Now’s the time to be creative and get those sports ideas together!

4-H Club News

The SJS 4-H Club will have their regular meeting on Friday, February 13, from 2:50-3:50.

Tangi 4-H is sponsoring a pet parade on Lundi Gras, February 23, at 10:30 in Zemurray Park in Hammond.

This event is open to the public! Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate.

Entry forms for the parade are available in the school office.

Come parade your dogs and cats!

Proceeds will benefit the Janice M. Brown Memorial 4-H Scholarship Fund.

Registration for 2009-2010

SJS registration of current students and their siblings for the 2009-2010 school year kicked off last week and is ongoing.

Registration forms are attached.

All parents should indicate whether or not their children will be returning to SJS the following year.

If your child is returning, a $200 per child registration fee is due with the registration form.

New students who are siblings of current students may also be added to this form. Their $200 registration fee is also due at this time.

All forms are due back to the office on or before Friday, February 13.

Registrations accepted after that date will be assessed a $100 per child late fee.

Any student not registered by Friday, February 13, risks losing their place in the class as the school will begin taking registrations from new students shortly after.

The new tuition schedule was sent home a few weeks ago. Tuition and/or loan papers will not be due until May 1. More information about that will be sent home later.

Red for Valentine's Day

Students may wear a Valentine t-shirt (any red shirt) with their blue jeans and school shoes on Friday, February 13, to celebrate Valentine’s Day. We ask for a $1.00 donation in order to wear the red t-shirts. Proceeds will go to support Children’s Hospital in Baton Rouge.

The SJS cheerleaders participated in “Kickin’ it for Kids” - a cheerleading competition featuring teams from all over the southern Louisiana region held at the SLU University Center last Sunday. Thanks to all who showed up to support the girls!

Our cheerleaders brought home a 4th place trophy! Way to go, ‘Saders!
