Psalm 88

R. Let my prayer come before you, Lord.

Daily I call upon you, O LORD;
to you I stretch out my hands.
Will you work wonders for the dead?
Will the shades arise to give you thanks?

R. Let my prayer come before you, Lord.

Do they declare your mercy in the grave,
your faithfulness among those who have perished?
Are your wonders made known in the darkness,
or your justice in the land of oblivion?

R. Let my prayer come before you, Lord.

But I, O LORD, cry out to you;
with my morning prayer I wait upon you.
Why, O LORD, do you reject me;
why hide from me your face?

R. Let my prayer come before you, Lord.

All points accumulated after that date will apply to the second quarter.

Fair Planning Meeting - October 6

A planning meeting for our May Fair will be held on Monday, October 6, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the school library.

Everyone is encouraged to attend this meeting. The more ideas and help we have, the better the fair will be. Whether you're a new family to the school or one that has been with us forever, we welcome you to attend this meeting.

SJS/Papa John's Pizza Night - October 7

St. Joseph School and Papa John's Pizza will collaborate on a fund raiser for the school on Tuesday, October 7.

October 7 is also Home & School Meeting, so ordering pizza is a great way to feed the family and make it to the meeting on time.

Tell Papa John's you're with St. Joseph School when ordering. They will donate a percentage of those sales to the school.

Please pass this message on to friends and relatives. Just by mentioning the school name when ordering pizza, they can have money donated to the school. It doesn't cost a dime extra.

This is a great way to help SJS and enjoy great pizza at the same time.

The next meeting of the St. Joseph Catholic School Home and School Association will be on Tuesday, October 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the gym.

STA Pink Out Volleyball Game - October 7

Living Rosary - October 8

The month of October is the month of the Holy Rosary.

The students at St. Joseph will participate in a patriotic living rosary on Wednesday, October 8, at 8:30 in the church. The patriotic rosary is dedicated to the consecration of our entire nation to Our Ldy's Immaculte heart.

We will not have Mass that day.

From our parish bulletin, September 28, 2014:

October is the month of the rosary - the best known Marian devotion.

Its origin is not perfectly clear. In the 9th century, Irish monks would chant all 150 Psalms. Because books were rare and most people could not read, 150 Hail Mary's were substituted for the Psalms.

Tradition has it that Mary gave St. Dominic the rosary in an apparition in the 14th century in Prouille, France. This is depicted in a stained glass window in our chapel. Another Dominican, St. Alan of Rock, and a Carthusian, Dominic of Prussia, promoted saying of the rosary and meditations on the beads.

St. Louis de Montfort, in ~1700 AD, developed the three sets of mysteries - Joyful, Sorrowful, and Glorious. In 2002, St. John Paul II added the Luminous Mysteries. Outside of Advent and Lent, the Joyful Mysteries are particularly recited on Monday and Saturday, the Luminous on Thursday, the Sorrowful on Tuesday and Friday, and the Glorious on Wednesday and Sunday.

The rosary is a beautiful way to peacefully meditate on the lives of Jesus and Mary. If you don't know how, or have forgotten how, to say the rosary, see
http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-workship/prayers-and-devotions/rosaries/how-to-pray-the-rosary.cfm, or "Google" it. The rosary is a lovely prayer that can bring you closer to God. Spend some time praying the rosary and experience its blessings.

Respect Life Mass - October 12

On Sunday, October 12, at 11:00 a.m., Bishop Robert W. Muench will celebrated the Bishop's Respect Life Mass at Sacred Heart Church.

Sacred Heart Church is located at 2250 Main Street in Baton Rouge.

Each of us is a masterpiece of God's creation.

There will be a special blessing for all those involved in Respect Life ministries.

All are invited to a reception following Mass in the parish hall.

This event is sponsored by the Office of Marriage & Family Life, Christian Formation Secretariat, Diocese of Baton Rouge.

However, we will have no bus service on that date. Everyone will be carpool. Carpool will run on both sides of the building in the morning as well as the afternoon.

Surveys Due - October 15

As a Reminder:

We are in the process of renewing our SACS Accreditation for the school and need some help from our parents.

This help comes in the form of taking a survey regarding our program effectiveness. We need at least a 20% response rate from our parents in order to use the information in our report.

The survey will be open until October 15. It only takes a few minutes of your time, costs nothing, and gives us much-needed feedback.

STA Open House - October 16

Our School-Wide Service Project

Look at all of the food collected this morning for our local needy!

First grade students (from left) Raymond Baham, Camille Digby, and Giada Guarneri admire the volume of donations made by our student body this morning to help feed our area hungry.

As a weekly service project, students fill up two large wagons with bagged, boxed, or canned goods on their way to Mass. This food is then donated to the parish food pantry operated by the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

We thank our wonderful students for their generous support of this worthy cause!

The 8th Grade Shirts Are Here!

Traditionally, 8th grade students receive special t-shirts to wear to school with blue jeans on Fridays as part of their spirit dress. Modeling their shirts on the first day they were able to wear them are Marlee Little (kneeling) and (from left) Catherine Dahmer, Alayna Chelette, and Marley Bohning.

To see other 8th graders in their shirts, please visit 8th GRADE SHIRTS.

People in History Project

To make their American History class "come alive", 7th graders dressed up as people in history and presented biographies of their characters.

Collin Babin poses as his favorite historical character, Christopher Columbus.

To see the other students, please visit PEOPLE IN HISTORY.
