Advisory Council

Parents,

The Advisory Council has been tasked over the last year with increasing parent involvement in the school. Studies show that involved parents improve child performance. A great article on these benefits written by the National Education Association can be found on their website, http://www.nea.org/tools/17360.htm

As part of our goal to increase parental involvement, we have started to develop a Parental Involvement Program, or PIP. It is early in the process, but we have identified several key aspects we think will make this successful. First, there will be a reasonable number of service hours to be completed by each family, not per child. Second, there will be a refundable deposit associated with the program. Please reach out to an Advisory Council member, to give them input on the following questions:

a. What would get you to be more involved?
b. In what activities do you think it is important for you to be involved?

The Advisory Council members and their contact information can be found under the community section on the school website.

We are optimistic that this new program will encourage more parents to participate, build new relationships and, ultimately create a better school. We welcome any input from you now and along the way. We would like to consider all feedback in order to make this first iteration as successful as possible.

Thank you,

School Advisory Council Members

Circles of Care--Parents

It is required each year that the schools and churches of the Diocese offer parents information pertaining to creating safe environments for children. The Diocese provides these flyers for parents to review. The information on the flyer is set by the Office of Child and Youth Protection and changes each year.

Please click the link below to review the 2016/2017 Parent flyers that are listed under “Family Nights” (Justice Hope Fortitude Prudence Temperance)

http://diobr.org/ministries/administrative-services/child-and-youth-protection

Circles of Care---Students

It is required by the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People that all children enrolled in Catholic Schools and Parishes receive Safe Environment training. The Diocese of Baton Rouges provides such training called Circles of Care. This lesson will be taught to our students on Thursday, October 13, 2016.

Parents may review their child’s lesson plan that will be taught in the classroom prior to this date by going to the following link:

http://diobr.org/ministries/administrative-services/child-and-youth-protection

At this point you will then click on the lesson pertaining to your child’s grade level listed under Circles of Care.

IF you DO NOT want your child to receive this lesson, please click below and read, complete, and return the 2016/2017 OPT OUT FORM to the school office in a marked envelope to the attention of Cory Pinion NO LATER THAN Friday,

October 7, 2016.

If you have any questions, please contact Cory Pinion at cpinion@sjscrusaders.org.

Water Bottles

Students may continue to bring water bottles to school. Please know that this is not mandatory or recommended by the city. Teachers will set reasonable parameters in the classrooms of appropriate times for students to have their water bottles out. Students will not be allowed to carry water bottles to enrichment or recess. They will have access to their water bottles when they return from these activities. It is our understanding that if students bring a water bottle from home, parents do not wish for students to drink water from our water fountains during the school day. For this reason, students who bring water bottles will not be allowed to refill the bottles while at school.

SJS Pelician Performance

Parents of 5th - 8th grade students,

Our school has the opportunity to send a group to sing the National Anthem on the court of a New Orleans Pelican's game. This week your child was given a blue colored flyer with detailed information. (Attached is another copy of that flyer.)

SJS students (5th – 8th grade) interested in participating in this performance, please complete the form and return it to the school office by this Friday, 9/23/16.

Morning Carpool Tardies

It is very important for students to be on time each morning. When needed the gates remain open and duty teachers allow children to enter the gym a couple of minutes after the bell in order to reduce the amount of assembly and class time that would be missed by checking in at the office, The school day begins at 7:35 a.m. and students must be in their class line in the gym when the bell rings and we stand for prayer to be considered present and on time. Gates will be closed no later than 7:37 a.m. each morning and students will have to be checked in through the office after this time.

Rosary

Jois us for the 2016 Public Square Rosary Crusade. Come join America Needs Fatima, Ladies Rosary Altar Society, and the Knights of Columbus in praying the Holy Rosary for World Peace and ProLife Issues on October 15th.

See attached flyer for more details.
