Saints of the Week

SAINTS OF THE WEEK

Monday, August 28th - Saint Augustine of Hippo

In his famous autobiography Confessions, Augustine tells of his struggle to find God. He excelled in school, but also went with a bad crowd and got into many worthless activities. One day while Augustine prayed to be free from his sins, he heard a voice chanting, “Take up and read.” Augustine opened the Bible and read the first thing his eyes fell upon, which told him

to give up his life of sin. As a bishop, his many sermons, letters, and books

reflect the ever-deepening love he felt for God. Augustine is the patron

saint of printers and theologians.

Tuesday, August 29th - Martyrdom of Saint John the Baptist

John, the greatest of prophets, did not hesitate to speak the truth, even if it would cost him his life! We are first introduced to John in Scripture when he leaped for joy in his mother’s womb at the greeting of Mary to Elizabeth, her cousin. John’s mission was to introduce our Savior, Jesus, to the world.

Wednesday, August 30th - Saint Jeanne Jugan

Born in France in 1792, Jeanne learned early-on the meaning of hard work but she also learned the beauty of the faith passed on to her by her mother. Later as a kitchen maid, she accompanied her mistress on visits to the sick and poor. Eventually, she founded a new congregation of nuns called The Little Sisters of the Poor who established homes to care for the elderly.

Thursday, August 31st - Saints Joseph of Arimathea & Nicodemus

Both Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus were important 1st century Jews who became disciples of Jesus. Joseph was a wealthy civic leader who obtained Jesus’ body from Pilate after the Crucifixion, and buried it. Nicodemus was a Pharisee who went to Jesus at night—secretly—to better understand his teachings.

They are the patron saints of funeral directors and pallbearers.

Friday, September 1st - Saint Giles

Despite the fact that much about St. Giles is shrouded in mystery, he was one of the most popular saints in the Middle Ages. He is considered one of the “14 Holy Helpers of Germany.” The Holy Helpers were a popular group of saints to whom people prayed, especially for recovery from disease. He is the patron saint of disasters and the disabled.
