SAINTS OF THE WEEK
Monday, September 11th - St. Jean-Gabriel Perboyr
Born in France in 1802, Jean-Gabriel, at age 15, was inspired by a sermon he heard, to become a missionary in China. He became a Vincentian priest and left for China in 1835. Once there, he helped to rescue abandoned Chinese children and educate them in the Catholic faith. He was arrested in 1839 under an edict that banned Christianity and he suffered martyrdom one year later. He was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1996.

Tuesday, September 12th - The Most Holy Name of Mary
Today’s feast is called The Most Holy Name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Whenever we call upon the holy name of Mary we call upon our mother, confident in her desire to comfort and protect us in time of need. Mary always points us to Jesus and helps us to open our hearts to God’s ways wherever that may lead us.
Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for us!
Wednesday, September 13th - St. John Chrysostom, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
John was born in 349 A.D. and became the Bishop of Constantinople. He was given the name “Chrysostom” which means “golden-mouthed” because he was an outstanding preacher. For his honesty and courage he paid the price of political enemies and exile.
His last words were, “Glory to God for all things.” He is the patron saint of preachers and speakers.

Thursday, September 14th - The Exultation of the Holy Cross
In the year 326, St. Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, found the Holy Cross on which Jesus was crucified. Legend has it that during the search a dying woman was healed by touching the true Cross of Christ.
The Cross immediately became an object of veneration.
Lord, by your cross and resurrection, you have set us free!
Friday, September 15th - Our Lady of Sorrows
The feast of Our Lady of Sorrows honors Mary who stood sorrowfully yet fearlessly at the cross while others fled. In his gospel, Luke tells of Simeon’s prediction about a sword piercing Mary’s soul.
Many early Church writers interpret the sword as Mary’s sorrows, especially as she saw Jesus die on the cross.
Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us!
